• Recent literature suggests individuals suffering chronic insomnia who have short objective sleep duration have underlying pathophysiological and clinical characteristics distinct from those with long objective sleep duration. However, it remains unclear whether the therapeutic effects of cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia (CBTi) differ between these proposed groups of insomnia sufferers.• This study was the first to assess the efficacy of a brief, group-based program of CBTi for older insomniacs with short objective sleep relative to those with long objective sleep duration.
