Preoperative 3D virtual modeling of a patient's skull and simulations using volumetric images created from preoperative computed tomography scans allows precise planning and virtual reconstruction in mandibular reconstruction [1–4], and decrease the associated morbidities [3]. However, most planning solutions are created by external engineers and require teleconferencing with surgeons in an expensive and time-consuming manner. Here, we present a novel method for surgery and reconstruction of segmental defects of the mandible to reduce the costs using an open-source software platform to plan and perform virtual surgery and employing 3D-printers to fabricate cost-efficient models and cutting guides.
