Demonstration of sympathetic dysfunction in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome by measuring sympathetic skin responses from the neck

• The probability of eliciting sympathetic skin responses (SSRs) from the neck was significantly lower in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) than in healthy controls.• The mean amplitudes of SSRs obtained from the neck were significantly smaller in patients with OSAS compared to those in healthy subjects.• SSRs from the neck can be used to follow up the efficacy of treatment in patients with OSAS.• SSRs recorded from the neck may be accepted as an effective method of demonstrating sympathetic dysfunction in patients with OSAS.
