• Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a potentially modifiable risk factor for diabetes.• We found that OSA was associated with greater risk of developing diabetes.• The association between OSA and incident diabetes was independent of obesity.• The positive association persisted even when the sample was restricted to obese.
