Opioid Prescription Patterns After Rhinoplasty—Reply

In Reply We applaud your groundbreaking publication on opioid use by patients after rhinoplasty. The significance of your findings cannot be overstated: facial plastic surgeons overprescribe opioids after rhinoplasty to a particularly vulnerable patient population at significantly greater risk for opioid abuse and prescription diversion. Your work was a major impetus for our group to expand the conversation on opioid prescription behaviors after rhinoplasty, using data from a statewide prescription drug-monitoring program. We strongly agree that we must now act to prevent opioid overprescription and optimize pain management among patients undergoing rhinoplasty. Algorithms for postoperative pain control, such as those published in your study, are imperative. We aim to highlight 3 additional pathways to prevent opioid overprescription.
