Every year 300,000 new cases of oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas (OCSCCs) are diagnosed worldwide [1] and only half of these patients will survive 5years [2]. The prognosis is negatively affected by inadequate surgical resections [3–5]. Nevertheless, it was recently shown that in current practice up to 85% of the oral resection specimens have inadequate resection margins (⩽5mm distance between tumor border and resection surface) [3,4].
