Human papillomavirus (HPV) is an established cause of oropharynx cancers [1,2]. HPV-positive oropharynx cancers bear distinct clinical, molecular, and epidemiological features compared to HPV-negative oropharynx cancers [2–4]. Importantly, patients with HPV-positive oropharynx cancers have significantly higher overall and progression-free survival rates compared to HPV-negative oropharynx cancer patients [2,5–9]. Consequently, clinical testing of oropharynx tumors to determine HPV status is increasingly being adopted [10–12] and clinical trials aimed at developing de-intensified therapies for HPV-positive oropharynx cancer patients are currently being conducted [13–15].
