Abstract
As one of the most common chronic liver diseases, the morbidity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly increased in the world. For pathological change, it is divided into simple steatosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and liver cirrhosis. Hepatocyte damage and inflammatory activity are the important characteristics to evaluate the progress of liver disease. Early and effective diagnosis of disease is quite important. Liver biopsy is considered as the gold standard of steatosis, fibrosis and cirrhosis. However, it is an invasive examination with some shortcomings and certain risk. Non-imaging methods such as clinical features and biochemical tests, imaging methods such as ultrasonography, FibroScan, computerized tomographic scanning and magnetic resonance imaging are included in noninvasive alternative examinations. They are relatively novel, safe and reliable for the noninvasive detection of liver changes. In this review, we analyze the benefits and progress of these noninvasive methods to evaluate steatosis, NASH for diagnosing NAFLD.
